Immersive multimedia experiences not only allow participants to discover information within a context, but also foster a sense of action-based empathy. Users are able to explore open-world 3D environments in another person’s shoes and make choices that will determine the potential outcome of the story.

A virtual reality reconstruction of the Canfield Green Apartments Complex where Michael Brown was fatally shot on August 9th, 2014. An immersive way to interact with constradictory eyewitness statements and FOIA’d evidence from the investigation to decide for yourself what happened that day.

I SURVIVED – THE COLOMBIAN CONFLICT

A first-person exploration in virtual reality of three contrasting accounts from the violence in Colombia: an ex-FARC soldier, ex-Paramilitary and ex-civilian victim caught in the crossfire. Produced during the Samsung/Timewave Lab VR incubator, soon available on Gear VR and Google Cardboard.

ABOUT

Empathetic Media is a media and technology agency based in DUMBO, Brooklyn, providing virtual and augmented reality storytelling solutions. Our team consists of VR, AR, 3D scanning, 360 video experts and is led by graphic journalist Dan Archer, one of the pioneers in Virtual Reality journalism. Archer was a 2014 Reynolds Journalism Institute Fellow and a 2011 Knight Journalism Fellow at Stanford University, where he also taught non-fiction graphic novel writing 2008-14. His work has been published by the BBC, CBC, Vice magazine, Fusion, San Francisco Public Press, American Public Media, Truthout and PBS among others and was featured in the BBC’s Future of News Report, which came out in January 2015.
